📜 The Revenue Bar Association

Founded on 20th February 1963, the Revenue Bar Association (RBA) is one of India’s premier institutions dedicated to tax law and revenue jurisprudence.

Its founding members include eminent legal luminaries such as Shri K. Parasaran (Former Attorney General of India), Shri M.M. Ismail (later Judge of the Madras High Court), Shri T.V. Viswanatha Iyer, Shri K. Srinivasan, Shri S. Swaminathan, and Shri S. Padmanabhan, among other distinguished Senior Advocates.

Created with the mission of encouraging the study of laws relating to revenue, economics, and planning, the Association has served as a critical platform for knowledge sharing and mentorship in Chennai’s tax law community.

🏛️ A Legacy of Leadership

Over the decades, RBA was strengthened under the leadership of stalwarts like Shri K.R. Ramamani, Shri V. Ramachandran, Shri K.J. Chandran, and Shri Arvind P. Datar, who all served as Presidents and contributed immensely to the Association’s prestige and development

📚 Libraries That Built Community

In the early 1970s, with the ITAT located in Nungambakkam High Road, a dedicated library space was secured within the Tribunal premises thanks to efforts by Shri K. Srinivasan and Shri S. Swaminathan. This became a central hub for sharing ideas among the finest tax minds in the city.

When ITAT relocated to Rajaji Bhavan in 1998, RBA was allotted a new room, where it continues to function. In addition, a second library was established at 32 Law Chambers, High Court, Madras for advocates practicing in indirect taxes.

🔄 Revival and Growth

Though RBA’s activities declined in the 1980s, the Association witnessed a remarkable revival in 1991, led by Shri K.R. Ramamani, with support from Shri K.J. Chandran, Philip George, and the late V. Balachandar. Their efforts restored the Association’s vibrancy and relevance.

🏅 Continuing Excellence

RBA has consistently hosted monthly study circle meetings and annual tax seminars, fostering continuous learning and professional growth.

In 2012–13, RBA celebrated its Golden Jubilee, with a year-long series of monthly seminars dedicated to past doyens of the tax bar—drawing acclaim from Judges of the Madras High Court and members of the wider legal fraternity.
